Have you thought about declaring your children for your retirement pension? Including them in the calculation of your pension is important. And not just for mothers!
It's necessary if you are in one of the following situations:
- mother of one or more children
- father of three or more children
- father of a child currently under 4 and a half years old
What is the rule?
Each child allows you to receive up to eight quarters: four quarters for maternity or adoption + four quarters for their upbringing (one quarter per year of joint residence).
The "maternity" quarters are always attributed to the mother.
The "adoption" and "upbringing" quarters are attributed to either parent, or shared:
- Birth before 2010: to the mother, unless the father proves that he raised the child alone for one or more years after the birth or adoption.
- Birth since 2010 (but child currently being under 4 and a half years old): these quarters can be shared between the parents (e.g. 2 upbringing quarters to the mother and 2 to the father). Please note: this option must be exercised within 6 months of the child's 4th birthday, i.e. when the child is between 4 years and 4 years and a half
If your child has a disability, you can receive up to 8 additional quarters. This increase may be granted if the child, with a permanent disability of 80%, is eligible for certain allowances and benefits provided for children with disabilities, including the Disabled Child Education Allowance (AEEH) or the Disability Compensation Benefit (PCH).
Finally, if you have 3 or more children, you receive a 10% increase in your general scheme pension. This increase applies to both the mother and the father. Your supplementary pension (Agirc-Arrco) is also increased.
How do I declare my children?
- Log in to your personal account at www.lassuranceretraite.fr → My personal account → connect via FranceConnect (impots.gouv.fr, Ameli, etc.).
- Open the "My procedures" menu ("Mes démarches")
- Select "Correct my career" or "Complete my career and declare my children" (« Corriger ma carrière » ou « Compléter ma carrière et déclarer mes enfants » - the title varies depending on the profile... the site isn't very clear, admittedly).
- Choose the "Children" ("Enfants") section (maternity, adoption, education) or "Declare a child" ("Déclarer un enfant")
- Complete the form and attach supporting documents (e.g. family record book).
- Confirm and track your request in "Track my procedures" ("Suivre mes démarches").
